Ever since we got serious about eating healthy, many different smoothies have grazed our palates and landed in our stomachs, ranging from raw eggs to frozen fruit and anything in between! Below is the recipe for our current favorite, enjoy!
Using a high speed blender is almost a necessity these days and will give the best result, we use a Vitamix and it is great! I am not sure how well a regular blender will do with this recipe.
The ingredients described here will be sufficient for 2 people if you are not too hungry or if you want to restrict your calorie intake.
Here are the steps. A list of the ingredients are at the bottom of this page.
Start with one medium sized avocado.
We have recently embarked on a lifestyle that is minimizing the consumption of sugar, even in the form of fructose, which means no more banana smoothies! I have always been against sugar substitutes but a blended drink is just not the same without the sweetness! I came across a former heart surgeon turned nutritionist who recommends the use of “Stevia” or “Just Like Sugar” as they are natural sweeteners. So I am trying them out and this one tastes pretty good.
I use three level table spoons for this recipe.
Next take a good size pinch of organic spinach and put it in the blender.
I have come across quite a bit of information about the benefits of hemp lately so I decided to try this powder to add protein and omega 3 to the smoothie.
I am using 2 heaping table spoons for this smoothie.
And now for some more greens, how about a head of romaine?
Chop it in to about 5 pieces.
Pack it in to the blender.
Time for some almond milk, this one is from Trader Joe’s. Get the unsweetened kind.
Add approximately 6 oz of almond milk.
Add approximately 6 oz of filtered water. If you like your green drink a bit thinner and/or want to save some of your almond milk for your coffee, you can always use water in place of some or all of the almond milk. We use filtered, restructured, ionized water for extra health benefits. The more almond milk you use the smoother the smoothie will be. Sometimes, if we are out of almond milk we use just water.
Again, having a high speed blender makes it easy to cool down your smoothie with a couple of ice cubes in the summer heat. Blend until smooth.
Following this recipe will make about 32 oz of green vegan hemp protein smoothness! So much better for you than Cheerios!
This recipe can of course be augmented and changed as desired. I find it to be a tasty fundamental Green Vegan Hemp Protein Smoothie.
List of ingredients:
- 1 Avocado
- 3 tbs of “Just Like Sugar”
- 2 cups of spinach
- 2 heaping tablespoons of Navitas Organic Hemp Powder
- 1 head of Romaine
- 6 oz of almond milk
- 6 oz of filtered water
- 4 ice cubes
- Get it all in a high speed blender and blend until smooth
“Just Like Sugar” we get online too and we prefer it to the taste of other sweeteners. It is made with chicory root and is a great natural option for people suffering from diabetes. When we don’t have it, we replace it in the blender with 2 dates.
